What is matcha?

Matcha is a fine green tea known for its intense colour and characteristic taste. This traditional tea comes from the Camellia sinensis plant and is valued for its versatility – it can be used in cooking or enjoyed as a fine hot drink.

Matcha is made through a careful growing and processing process:

Growing and shading: The tea bushes are shaded for about three weeks before harvest, allowing the leaves to develop an intense flavour and deep green colour.
Harvest: Only the youngest and most tender leaves – the top two leaves and the bud – are picked for matcha.
Steaming and drying: After picking, the leaves are steamed to stop oxidation and then dried to preserve their freshness.
Grinding: The dried leaves are ground in granite mills into a fine powder that blends perfectly with both food and drinks.

Our matcha varieties come from certified organic farming in Japan and undergo a thorough processing and production process there. Grinding in granite mills is the hallmark of “authentic” matcha; one mill produces only 40 g of this ultra-fine matcha powder per hour.

Preparation suggestion

Matcha is great for making drinks and dishes, as well as for cooking and baking. Use up to 1 g (half a teaspoon) in foods and drinks such as smoothies, cocktails, tea, cakes, muffins, chocolate, ice cream or even pesto.
