The açaí berry (Euterpe oleracea) is a dark purple to black fruit that grows on the açaí palm in the tropical rainforests of the Amazon region – especially Brazil. These palms, also known as cabbage palms, can grow up to 20 metres tall and bear berries in dense clusters. The berries, about 1–1.4 cm in size, are carefully picked by hand, as they grow high in the treetop.

The açaí berry has a fruity and slightly tart taste; it is often used as a purée or powder in smoothies and bowls. To make the powder, the fruit is gently processed into a purée after picking and then dried, preserving its deep purple colour and characteristic taste.

Use

Add about 1 teaspoon (3 g) of powder daily to 250 ml of liquid, such as fruit juice or a soy, oat, almond, rice or coconut drink. Açaí powder is ideal for smoothies, muesli, desserts, yogurt and baking.
