The rock salt comes from a primeval sea in central Germany that dried up about 220 million years ago. Movements of the Earth’s crust buried it deep underground, where it is protected from environmental influences. The salt is mined, mechanically crushed and ground. Rock salt is not dissolved in water, evaporated or refined. Natural salt (halite) consists of perfect geometric cube-shaped crystals.

Ordinary table salt is refined; refined table salt, or sodium chloride, is processed with various chemical substances.
