A merchant shipping tea from Asia to England on behalf of the British East India Company loaded a few barrels of bergamot on the way to Italy. He was then caught in a storm and some of the barrels leaked. Bergamot oil flowed over the tea chests and the tea became soaked with the oil.

After arriving in England, the ship owner, Earl Grey, sold the spoiled tea at a lower price. To everyone's surprise, demand was high, and so 'Earl Grey Tea' became a true bestseller to this day!

Earl Grey tea is traditionally made from Chinese Keemun (Gong Fu) black tea with added bergamot essential oil. The oil comes mainly from Calabria, where this type of citrus grows particularly well. Bergamot oil is an important ingredient in many perfumes, is in high demand and is therefore very expensive.

Most Earl Grey teas on the market use so-called "nature-identical" or "natural" flavouring. Both have little to do with nature. The first is synthesised from lignite, the second from yeast, fungi and bacteria grown in bioreactors. Not exactly appetising.
