Oregano (wild marjoram) is a plant with a pleasant spicy aroma, known in Estonia also as “sausage herb”. Worldwide, it is best known as oregano, the classic pizza seasoning. It is used for making tea, as a culinary herb and as a traditional medicinal herb. As a culinary herb, oregano is added to savoury dishes, and is especially popular for seasoning blood sausage and pizza.

According to Estonian folk beliefs, oregano also had magical powers. Calming oregano tea was traditionally given to women after childbirth and used in folk tradition for well-being during times of fright, restless sleep and the cold season.

To prepare, take 2 tablespoons of herb, add a glass of boiling water and let steep under a lid for 15–20 minutes. Traditionally drunk hot in the cold season, or cool or lukewarm, half a glass before meals, to support digestion.

Pregnant women are advised to avoid drinking oregano tea, as it may increase uterine contractions!
