What is spirulina?
Spirulina is a blue-green microalga that grows naturally in the alkaline lakes of Central America, Africa, Australia and Asia. The most important spirulina species – Arthrospira platensis (also simply known as spirulina) – is one of the oldest known life forms on Earth. Its distinctive colour and long history make it a very versatile alga. Algae such as spirulina and chlorella are plant-like organisms that can be divided into macroalgae and microalgae. While macroalgae are visible to the naked eye, microalgae like spirulina are microscopic single-celled organisms.
Raab Organic Spirulina is grown under controlled conditions in certified organic production. The algae grow in ponds; after harvesting they are filtered, gently dried and finely ground. Raab spirulina consists of 100% pure spirulina and contains no additives.
Did you know…
Did you know that algae are a fascinating and diverse group of plant-like organisms? There are over 500 edible algae species in the world, including spirulina and chlorella. These tiny single-celled microscopic algae are called microalgae and differ from multicellular macroalgae, which are visible to the naked eye. Algae are very diverse and play a vital role in the Earth’s ecosystems. They are known for producing oxygen through photosynthesis and forming the basis of many food chains. Spirulina and chlorella have long been valued in many cultures and are used in many different ways.
