Absorption of vitamin B12

Vitamin B12 is naturally absorbed through the intestine (from food). Vitamin B12 from both food and food supplements is absorbed actively at 2 µg, plus passively at about 1%. Because of the high vitamin B12 content of food supplements, the benefit comes mainly from passive absorption (the larger the amount of vitamin B12). Of 500 μg of vitamin B12, 2 μg is therefore absorbed actively and about 1%, or 4.98 μg, passively, for a total of approximately 7 μg of vitamin B12.

6-11 months: 0.5 μg

12-23 months: 0.6 μg

2-5 years: 0.8 μg

6-9 years: 1.3 μg

10 years and older, and adults: 3 μg
