The inner bark of slippery elm has long been used in herbal tradition and is also widely used in food supplements. Beige in colour and strongly mucilaginous, it has a faint fenugreek-like smell and a mild taste. In the first American work on medicinal plants, Materia Medica Americana (1787), J. Schoepf described slippery elm as a kind of “bark ointment”. The gel-like pulp obtained from the inner bark of this tree has traditionally been used to coat and support the mucous membranes from the mouth all the way to the intestines.

Slippery elm bark is traditionally used to:

• support the mucous membranes,
• provide antioxidants,
• soothe the throat, oesophagus and intestines,
• gently support bowel function.

DIRECTIONS: 2–4 capsules daily with a balanced meal, or as recommended by a therapist or doctor. Do not exceed the recommended dose. The capsule can be opened and its contents sprinkled into a drink or food. Food supplements should not be used as a substitute for a varied diet. A varied and balanced diet and a healthy lifestyle are important. Keep out of reach of children.

As a drink: Mix the contents of the capsule with 200 ml of cold water until it dissolves into a smooth mixture. Then slowly add hot water or another suitable hot liquid, stirring constantly.
